Уменьшение размеров раската или его частей в боковом или горизонтальном направлении. Боковое обжатие широко используют при прокатке в разрезных калибрах и открытых фланцевых ручьях. Боковое обжатие начинает преобладать над прямым обжатием, совпадающим с уменьшением межвалкового зазора, когда угол наклона боковой обжимающей поверхности калибра превышает угол трения на > 45°.
